Domestic system
Modular and multifunctional system for convivial spaces, adapted to modern small residential spaces.
2024 Prototype, Images Giovanni Bettinelli
This project began with the creation of a visually appealing, functional and easy to move modular coffee table prototype for my own home.
By integrating this piece into a domestic setting, I began to question its evolution. It became more than just furniture; it became a central element of everyday life, adaptable to various contexts beyond the home. I started designing different solutions to add accessories and adapt the table for various household uses, as is its nature.
The archetypal table exists in various forms, sizes and materials and symbolises hospitality and connection. It represents the heart of the home across cultures and supports a variety of daily activities, such as work, dining, play and creativity.
The design combines the simple modular cube with the multifunctional, flexible and mobile concept of the traditional Japanese Chabudai table. Each black lacquered MDF cube has colourful castors for easy movement. The assembly does not use glue to ensure that every element of the composition can be correctly recycled. The modules can also be used individually as storage units for books, dishes, and other household items and can be stacked as required. The elements are connected to one another with butterfly screws to ensure modularity and freedom of use.
The trays add an engaging, playful element to the design and can be used for a variety of purposes, including culinary uses. Three designs have been created so far: the bowl, the zigzag and the ikebana. Each element can be used on the table and in other areas of the home for multiple purposes. Another section of the website is being developed for the trays as ongoing studies are being conducted into alternative materials.
The modularity of the system.
